ASAM Criteria Training

As part of the State Opioid Response (SOR) grant, The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services is sponsoring two day, ASAM Criteria Implementation Trainings as well as three day, ASAM Criteria Leadership Implementation trainings.

Two-Day ASAM Criteria Implementation Training:

This two-day, application-focused training provides participants with an in-depth look at the theoretical foundations of the Criteria, including clinically driven services, biopsychosocial assessment, the six dimensions, continued stay and transfer/discharge criteria.  Incorporating the use of the new edition of The ASAM Criteria, participants have opportunities for skill practice at every stage of the treatment process: assessment, engagement, treatment planning, continuing care and transfer or discharge.

  • All participants receive a free copy of The ASAM Criteria and an in-depth Training Journal to guide the training experience and as a resource for continuing skill application, as part of the training.
  • 13 CME/CEU credits are provided. To receive CE credit, you must attend the full two days of the training.

Three-Day ASAM Criteria Implementation Leader Training:

This training builds upon the concepts taught in the two-day ASAM Criteria Implementation training through an evolved approach of the Training of the Trainers model. Learners will develop skills to become “Implementation Leaders” to help guide their organization and staff in the ASAM Criteria implementation process. The training emphasizes thoughtful planning, communication and appropriate system change strategies to drive implementation and sustainability, as well as coaching and supervising others on the ASAM Criteria.

The two-day ASAM Criteria Implementation Training is a prerequisite to this course. Please bring a copy of The ASAM Criteria book with you to this training.

  • Two hours of free coaching calls are available to participants within six months after the training.
  • Each attendee may request up to two free copies of The ASAM Criteria books to assist with implementation within their agencies.
  • 19.5 CME/CEU credits are provided. Participants MUST attend all three days of the training and complete 2 hours of coaching calls within the six-months after the training to receive credit.

Online Training Modules:

Two free online training modules on the ASAM Criteria are available: Multidimensional Assessment (5.0 CEs) and From Assessment to Service Planning (5.0 CEs). Please contact julie.spohn@mha.ohio.gov to receive the unique code to access the training opportunity.
